A poem a day to keep brain rot away

Join me as I attempt to create a poem a day... whether awesome, bawdy, corny, dreadful, entertaining, fabulous, gross or hilariously hokey, I will try to string together everything from couplets to limericks - just for the fun of fiddling with words!

May 3rd, 2012

Today is quite a special day. I have actually reached the one year mark. I posted my first poem on May 3rd, 2011. I have had a great time doing this. It has basically become a habit and I don’t really want to stop. So, I am going to continue this thread because I have enjoyed it so much. It’s true that most of the poems were terrible. Some were good (or at least I thought so!) but mostly they were a reflection of something I either saw that day, thought of, felt or heard. In any case, I hope you have enjoyed the ride as much as I have. Here’s to letting the word out – come what may!

2011

An ode to a year now winding down
You gave us much cause to frown
Yet in there was joy and happiness too
But we'll still be glad to be rid of you
So thanks for the good and maybe the bad as well
For it might have all been good - as only time will tell

Skill

Forgive me as I grow old
No chance of asking this hand to fold
Do my best I always will
As long as I retain my skill

Up or down

An elevator going up
Is much better than one going down
Unless that's where you want to be
Remaining closer to the ground
Those who choose up
Have different options, yes,
But those who choose down
Will never second guess

A contribution!!

Hi all, here's an original contribution from the very talented Niven Muire. Enjoy!

The diamond in my eye

Such a beauty divine,
Beyond the limits of time.
Symbol of perfection,
With a look so sublime.

To the dimonds we run,
Like the glow of the sun.
So shiny and bright,
It's got to be right.

The dimond in my eye,
Has no sparkle or shine.
It's blacker then night,
Absorbing all the light.

Weighed down by the world
And the pressures of life,
It lies in the dark,
In perpetual night.

A dimond can not be,
Without the pressure of time,
Or the absence of light.
The dimonds we see
did not just happen to be.

It's so easy to love the light,
For love is light.
But the realest thing in life,
Is to crawl into darkness
and bring out the light.

-N!¥€N-

Really?

There was merriment one day
In a time, oh so far away
But it wasn't meant for me
For I had not yet been set free
I did not realize then
That such happiness would hardly be mine again
Yet such strides have been taken
That at times it feels the world's been shaken
And forward is the only way I'll look
Unless caught in a beloved book

The holidays have been stressful and busy and so you get two today instead of one yesterday and one today. I'm looking forward to the New Year.

Happy Holidays everyone and may the coming year be better than your dreams.

Resolve

Let's look back and wonder why
We did the things we did
Take stock of the year that's past and resolve on what's to come
And feel for once the words being said
While atoning for what's been done

40 years seems long ahead
But quick from behind
It's a bumpy path, not always smooth
But beautiful if you don't mind

Holidays

Twas the night before Christmas
And all through the land
Families were coming together
To join hand in hand
This one joyous time
Comes round every year
And enjoy it we will
For Santa is near

Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Dentist?

Grey teeth smile back at me
Where white they once used to be
What happens when life hits you back
The wine, the rum and the fast track
The ciggies, the beer
The food and good cheer
Doesn't seem fair
That it's all etched right there
For all to know
Those pearly whites have lost their glow

Clutzy cutie

Another silly rhyme time!

There was a girl from Beneche
Whose feet seemed always enmeshed
She clattered about
Falling inside and out
Saying, "good grief! I'll ruin my best dress!"

Muck

Another year come round the bend
This string of luck doesn't seem to end
No matter what we try to do
It seems like something's holding onto you
Maybe in time things will change
Maybe it's a just a question of moving out of range

Our place

Watching the last rays fade from the sky
I repeat that eternal and everlasting question: why?
Our insignificance immense
Yet we swagger and boast with such pretense
Believing in our strength and might
We subdue all around us with unfair fight
Maybe one day we'll all understand
Our greatest strength is walking hand-in-hand

Sea song

No spark too small for nature's grace
Not just reserved for one privileged race
The breath of life is the key
That brings it all together so beautifully
So when two minds find a meeting place
It's best that connection to embrace

Once

Like crystal filament pulled through a straw
Every quivering breath I draw
Is a wonderful moment in time
When all I want can be mine
So long as I have the strength to fight
For what I know and want that's right

Past

I saw your eyes the other day
And remembered what I had to say
It was fun when things were new
Laughs were many and cares were few
But no regret I take with me
Of what was then and what could be
Our time was not meant to last
Despite having had a blast
So go with a heart full of cheer
Knowing that heaven was so very near

After show

I waited for you after the show
There with the others, with hearts aglow
Waiting and hoping for what can never be
Soaking up the words that create fantasy
But broken hearts are found far and wide
For you already walk with someone by your side
Not that a difference it would make
For there is no connection here to break
So leaving the group surrounding the door
I walk home to where there's so much more

Double vision

Let's go through the looking glass to see what we can see
A world turned upside down I'll wager, a landscape of mystery
No simple way from here to there, vaporous clouds to smother
All spark of life and love and thought, so we needn't even bother
But this world is not so very different from the one we've left behind
A place of bitter cast off things we've no real wish to find

Bursting

Too much pressure
This pressure's got to stop
Too much pressure
It's getting to my head!

Yes, I've completely ripped off the lyrics, but they aptly described what I'm feeling right now. Here's one of my own...

Never did I think that I would feel this way
Just so much tension, I sense I'm starting to fray
Leaving for just a while is such a welcome break
That returning at the end is sometimes hard to take
Every step has lately been so fraught
With worry and things much better left forgot
I know something's gotta give
And when it does, I know, it'll be much easier to live

The right toons

Some things just get better with each passing year
Like merry old toons celebrating all we hold dear
Watching the worn images flicker gaily across the screen
Again I remember what all of this means
A time to reflect and do what's right
As the rest of the time it's generally out of sight

So things are all right

No need to hush

So let's fill this room with sound
It's times like these
When we're most at ease

Ice

Blue black haze is all I see
Get away from in front of me
Your anger spills every where
And now I have received my share
So, don't be surprised if my heart is stone
This ice is reserved for you alone

Bittersweet

A dark highway alone at night
Random thoughts the only light
A mournful melody, a soulful tune
Hoping for a glimpse of the moon
No such luck as tires eat the miles
Drowning in long forgotten smiles

Going about our work each and every day
Knowing so little of what's going on
Listening only to our own song

Words

My heart's not made of stone
And all those words were thrown
Without a care of what they mean
For the hurt is all unseen
Now the next generation is getting a taste
Of the barbs, the taunts, the waste
And it hurts even more the next go round
Because peace we thought was found

New life

What is it like to close your eyes
And wake up in a different life?
Will the light draw you in
As long as there's no greater sin?
Or will confusion keep you there
Moving lightly, as if through air?
Of either option the only must
Is passing the vortex while the old turns to dust

First Snow

Winter's back! With a vengeance.

No quiet return over several days
No delicate flakes to brighten pathways
Just a dump of white from the sky
Leaving us all to question why
We live in this frozen spot
Where nine months of the year, it's just not hot!

The cold has frozen my brain and I can't think up anything better today. Sorry to make you suffer along with me!

Swan

Let my heart beat for the very last time
Bleach my skin with bitter lime
Take me to that frozen place
Where virtue's the only saving grace
I will not cry
When my blood's drained dry
And as my flesh turns to stone
In strength and beauty I will have grown
Now grant the wish of my inner heart
So we both may make a brand new start
Forever can't ever be long enough
For this kind of wondrous, fairy-tale stuff
Quickly now the sun's going down
I'm anxious to wear this crimson crown
Where life will suddenly be extreme
But also a never-ending dream

A little tribute to B & E.

You have mail

Yay! for the mail carrier who brings good news
On days when you'd otherwise be singing the blues
Life turns around in unexpected ways
And brings sudden surprises on grey-ish days
A reminder, I guess, to count our blessings
Since forgetting the roses is one of our biggest failings

One, two, three

Let the waves wash over me

I move to the beat and let myself fly
Knowing inside one day I'll die
Until then I want to live and breathe
Feeling a rhythm that will never deceive

Run

Help me find that ounce of grace
That will help me run this long-distance race
Keep me on top of all these facts
That will get me through the many acts

Fueling each early morning spin
I just hope that it will last
And not become another part of the past

Never a dull moment

Fight or flight

Beware the Jabberwocky
It will eat your fear
And grow more hideous
With each passing year
The bigger it grows
The harder 'twill be
To do what you will
Independently
But slay it small
And you will see
That it weren't so fearsome
As made out to be
Just frightful enough
To keep you in check
On the road well trod
So you won't deflect
But if your heart
Be something stronger
Then hack away
And dream that much longer

Loss

Desire can die in so many ways
Sometimes it is slow and insidious
Sometimes it vanishes overnight
Actions and words can erode the soul
And drive a wedge into even the smallest cracks
Can it be regained?
The future really holds the key
While the heart must let go of the past

Can the heart be satisfied if split in two?

For true love will always triumph despite the tears

Two-For

I very unwittingly missed a day because of sheer exhaustion - not a good enough excuse, I know - sorry about that! I have therefore, included two poems for today to make up for this oversight.

Falling for fall

Sunlight filters through the leaves
Crowning the trees in blazing colour
No more delectable time of year
Than this honey-gold autumn flavour

Making merry while the sun still shines
Knowing that the north wind is getting ready
To blow our cares back into focus
While we long for the days of warmth and plenty

Happy again

Yes, that bleakness has gone
I am again ready to sing my song
I know the future is looking bright
No more sorrow or loss of sight
Focused more keenly on what is true
Knowing that we will make it through
Confident in the spirits that support us all
Knowing that we can never fall

Monday, October 31, 2011

Ghostly question

Is the veil really thinnest on this one night of the year?
Can the other side be waiting just to heighten our fear?
Or is it more than a fancy, a flight beyond our dreams?
To feel this closeness as the year begins to fray around the seams?

Let us blend into the sunset, and reach between the worlds
To touch the hands that beckon, while our fright dissipates like mist as the sun unfurls

Green hands

Green hands really show your age
When every line looks like ground-in sage
But it is also a sign of things done well
A satisfaction that starts to swell
And drowns out the nattering chatter
That can drive us madder than a hatter

Not so real, please

Let us swing down from the stars
And head out to the smoky bars
Where fame will get you far indeed
But where destruction comes at high speed
To remain the way we were
Is a fate more real and far more sure
So can we all just agree
That from now we'll all bathe in the open sea
And eat from vines the lushest fruit
And leave behind this constraining suit
That binds us while luring us in
With promises of pleasure and our grandest win

A mermaid's tears can give you life
But only on stranger tides
With a witty Jack to cross your path

Fork in the road

So much is about to change
I never imagined going back to the start
And yet here I sit
With a much happier heart
Knowing what I do
I can imagine away the rest
And in my spare time
I will continue to strive towards that crest
One day it will all be different
And we'll have all we desire
Until then this new road
Is what will take us higher

Dharma

A happy home is all you need
The only fire you have to feed
Without it you will fall from grace
And lose your spot, your hard-fought place
On this ladder that we all must climb
The one getting higher from the dawn of time
For we've pushed heaven far out of reach
By sucking the beauty like a greedy leach
Now our only sure route back
Is a faith that so many of us lack

Out of tune

In heaven's name we were sent
Around the corner until we got bent
A smoking bullet through eyes wide shut
A constant roiling in our gut
Now more than ever the song's all wrong
I hope it doesn't last too long
This discordant tune is hard to take
When there is so much now at stake

What do you see?

Reality is more than what you see
No two people will share the same mentality
Your ears will hear one thing
But a different set will hear another ring
Your eyes a tranquil paradise behold
To others a social gathering before the cold
So, to insist your way be true
Is to claim you have a better clue
Than all the rest who share this space
And strive to keep up with this race

Knowing when to cut the string
Can be a very empowering thing
A leap of faith that resonates
Through the universe and with the fates
To jump not knowing if you can fly
Will provoke destiny to reply
And more often than not
You'll soar - as long as you gave it your best shot

The optimists

A tingle went down my spine
When you said that you'd be mine
The fates had clearly heard my plea
And altered my otherwise lonely destiny
Now I pray that time will stand still
So I can enjoy this loving thrill
For longer than the time I've got left
Before I depart, leaving you bereft
So for now let the moon be our guide
As we glide over the dance floor side-by-side

Congrats to Sir P and to the Duchess of A - both of whom still believe in love.

Thanksgiving

Another day of thanks
Gathering from all the ranks
Young and old, family and friends
Where tradition never ends
To celebrate our bountiful year
And thank those we hold most dear

COME ON!!!

Another day, another dollar
And it makes me want to holler
When I'm ripped off at the bank
Because security has gone lank
I pay you not to let my money out
Until I give you a shout
For if you can't keep it snug
I'll just store it under my rug!!!

Yes, my bank card was compromised - AGAIN. And money was taken out account AGAIN.

Politics

Are they really all the same?
Can this really be the game?
It's sad to think we've sunk to a space
Where loyalty and integrity are no longer common place
Where egos and strife rule the world
While wrong is slowly allowed to unfurl

Timing is off

A race is being run
A nightmare become real
When you want to move
But your feet are encased in steel
The motives are all right
The time is completely wrong
And when you realize it
You're very late for the song
The choir has started
The fun is being had
The one you love
Is sitting behind you looking sad
All you can do
Is promise that you
Will never again let this happen
And try for the next week your mind to sharpen

Golden Apple

An apple a day
Was the holy way
From time immemorial

In recent years past
This adage amassed
A new and devoted following

The message was clear
A new day was here
This fruit was much more than it seemed

A miracle cure
In a casing so pure
That anyone could enjoy it with pleasure

Now a daily part of our lives
The messenger dies
For completed was his Job

Angel song

A little angel sang to me
A haunting, bittersweet melody
A lament of all that the world used to be
When men and beasts all roamed free

Now the pattern has been changed
Gaia's bounty constantly being rearranged
Men and beasts now all deranged
For our ambitions are all too far out of range

Maybe one day we'll find our way back
Maybe when resources we begin to lack
And our drive starts going slack
Then we'll return to the path to retrace our tracks

Buy and hold... Or not

Rising up against the man
That old notion has a new fan
Who's joining now to bring them down
To smash that old and glittering crown
Out with the old, let's bring on the new
Where the many are fed not just the few
Maybe it's time to change our views
Since market capitalization is now old news

Time

Once upon a time
When we were all so young
When the world was not so complicated
And we lived for games and fun
I believed we had forever
To run this grand old race
Now I know much better
As evidenced by the lines on my face

Waiting room

Standing room only
What a way to spend my time
But if there's any trouble
Then it will surely be worth my dime
Better safe than sorry
Is what parents breathe
For nothing's more dear to us
Than our precious seed

Light switch

Walked through a garden of peace
Watched the "V" of leaving geese
Wondering where they will go
Escaping the inevitable snow
Knowing now that the future is plastic
Not captured for ages with an instamatic
Focused on turning off the switch
That has caused this insane and frightening glitch
Understanding that only with faith
Can we attempt to change our fate

Quiet

One hour of quiet in a busy day
Is so like heaven because I get to play
In my mind I frolick and run
And around the waterfalls have so much fun
No better cure for cares and woes
Than feeling the sand wash over my toes
And hearing sweet whispers in my ear
Promising my heart will always be near

Dreams

They slip away like fingers gripping sand
Images that haunt your thoughts and leave you desperate to understand
Try as you might feelings are all that get left behind
And figuring them out is often like walking blind
Once in a while a fleeting sequence will be yours to keep
But only until the very next time you close your eyes to sleep

Suffrage

Black ghosts flitting through life
Allowed to vote but definitely not drive
Always yearning, wanting more
But never permitted past the door
When will the justices see the error
Of imposing this form of accepted terror
On those who give life and nurture the youth
And ultimately pass on their culture and truth

Riding another recession
Nothing we do seems to be right
Stresses are piling up
And now reality is starting to bite
Trying our best to keep happy
But there just doesn't seem to be any respite
And just when things look up
A curtain falls and there's no end in sight

Optimism

It really is a wonderland
One we cannot comprehend
Never dull or plain or bland
Excitement so intense it can rend
But colour is also part of the plan
And warmth and beauty too
So the good and bad go hand-in-hand
For each day is always fresh and new

Idylle

Here lie two lost souls
Bound together through hard luck
Sealed for eternity
Because fate seemed to be stuck
Best of friends found hand in hand
In a place most obscure
Having left behind all they knew
Staring over in a place most pure
Their trials may have seemed great
But in the end it's clear
They had the better luck
Of all those they held most dear
So don't despair of their lives
They were blessed beyond belief
Being here together
Brought more than just comfort and relief

Birds and bbbb's

Can you see the bee?
Spell it right or see it flee
Social media has exposed the truth
Webster's has now become moot
Sign it well or not at all
It doesn't matter on your wall
Just put down whatever you choose
Because it matters we all lose
But find the gem and we will laugh
Because in the end it's still a gaff!

Watering can

Another grand show today
Everything seems to be going our way
On the surface, yes, things are good
But the core is like brittle wood
Water is being poured tirelessly
To revive the roots of this massive tree
Just hope and pray that it will respond
As of its shade we've grown very fond

Soldiering on

I want a better tomorrow
I want to know that we will be okay
But sometimes when I look around
I find happy thoughts hard to stay
When soldiers come back broken
And those in charge just wash their hands
After stripping them of feeling
And sending them off to distant lands
So much around to lament
The indifference and sheer contempt
Maybe one day it will all change
And the social class will be rearranged
Then we'll see how well the shoe fits
When the leaders are the ones taking all the hits

Comiccon 2011

Walking through halls of grey
All these people in my way
Seeing ghosts of youth go past
Watching others having a blast
I once was there, in those shoes
It was so important to know the clues
Now it all seems slightly stale
As I've finally finished that fabled tale
It's now for others to wear their pride
While I just go along for the ride
Knowing that in my heart
I was there right from the start

Magic

Call of the wild
Brings out my inner child
Takes me back to days gone by
When we never questioned who, when or why
We lived on feelings and pure emotions
Magically journeying over exotic oceans
Loving every minute we had
Never allowing ourselves to be sad
Now to touch that kind current
Is to ride every fleetingly happy torrent

Stretched

Support does not work both ways
Right now it I'm it, but that's as far as it goes
The weight is heavy, I know this to be true
When the pressure's on that's when your inside shows

I feel the burden just like you
What you don't realize is that I do my best
From dawn to dusk the meter's on
With no ears to unload the cares from my chest

Now you are pushing for me to look
When you don't realize just how things will change
Not just for me but for the other three as well
As I will be far out of range

Pounding waters flowing over me
Sloughing away filth and insanity
Brightening up what once was pure
Helping me get back to here
Now the world spins 'round once more
A merry-go-round we've all experienced before
But the ducks and turtlea are free
And that is always heartening to see

Again

Make it rain! Make it rain!
I wish it would rain again
It's been so long that I've forgotten
And now all emotions are simply rotten
Wish the ideal place was here
Somewhere close and somewhere near
I guess I have to face
The fact that I've been out of the race
And now catching up is harder than ever
So for me right now, there is no pleasure

Past St-Andre

Passing by in the middle of the day
Pounding rhythms float my way
Down from a staircase all shrouded in dark
A jungle beat promising a noon-time lark
But eager travellers must beware
For beneathe the scum lies a viper's lair
Try as you might, the filth won't go
So think twice before taking in a show

Your lies kept the problems very well hid

The worst part is that while we suffer
The MDs drown our concerns with skeptical laughter

Persecuted

Drama queen in the bathroom
Breaking every rule
Determined to be persecuted
In church and home and school

Let's forget all the good parts
And look only at the pain
Focus on the negative
And never see any gain

Give in to pure emotion
And wallow in self-pity
Curse the ones who care
And believe that no one loves me

Walk this earth with care, my dear
As such vision can be blinding
Learn to chanel your anger
Or find yourself caught in a snare that's binding

Weather patterns

When the past is weighing you down
When the worry of others makes you frown
Is it okay to stop and say "no!"
And then to simply shake loose and let go?
The past can be an awful chain
That stymies the present by freezing your brain
A hardened and uncomfortable yolk
Meant to please only other folk
So should your past threaten your blue sky
Take a moment to ask yourself why
A ghost should hold the power
To turn your sun into a stormy shower

Shipwrecked

One more time we shall dance
Only because we have the chance
Our paths may cross again down the line
But you will always be a friend of mine
Now this hour is sad indeed
Because we have finally been freed
Yet this journey was one I'll forever cherish
Knowing how we nearly perished
However saved we were by each other's grace
And so fond memories will I always have of this place

One day

Today's offering is in honour of "One Day" - the fabulous book by David Nicholls that is now a movie starring the beautiful Anne Hathaway as Emma Morely and the very yummy Jim Sturgess as Dexter Mayhew. The poem should actually be sung to the tune of "somewhere over the rainbow."

One day off in the future
The stars will align
And then Dex and Emma'll be together
Yes, how their love will shine

(chorus)
When Dex met Emma the gods were cruel
Because it was the end of school, it's true
What should have been a one night thing
Instead became a constant thing...
Best friends through and through

But that day in the future came quite fast
And our wayward lovers were joined together at last
Alas author David Nicholls knows quite well
That happy-ever-after does not sell
And so our lovers are parted, in a way I know I shouldn't tell

Saw the movie tonight with my own Dex. It was quite good despite the reviews.

Longing for summer

The sky is touched with yellow
The leaves are full of green
The air is full of nice sounds, crisp and clean
The birds begin to twitter and fade into the coming night
For as the shadows stalk their prey,
Everything vanishes from sight

I had no inspiration tonight, so I cheated and posted a poem I wrote on June 4th, 1987. So, don't laugh at the high school try!

Smooth sailing

There are so many things I could have said
But I didn't
So many things ran through my head
But I stayed silent
I knew my role was just to listen
And so I did
I knew my role was not to chasten
So on my judgement I kept a lid
Friendship is a touselled ocean
Over which navigation can be tough
But once you've got your ship in motion
An even keel can smooth over even a patch most rough

Disturber

Just when the dust seems settled
And the calm has come at last
A new calamity hits
And we are thrown by the blast
Never a peaceful moment
Or a quiet spell
The dirt will again come flying
To stir up heck and hell
It might be best to quit
And start again anew
With somethig very similar
But with a different view
Such thoughts are very comforting
But sadly not in the plan
For it's not for me to cut the string

Left turn

Riding at night
Adventure in sight
But it didn't start out that way
For when we left it was still as bright as day
Now we know
That paths don't show
Exactly where you are
And unknowingly you can end up very far
I guess it shows
That no one knows
Just where they're really going
Despite some very careful planning!

1263

No words are flowing this evening
As I sit before my screen
I've only got a feeling
That it should be about something green

So let's talk about a basement
That's in complete disarray
It's windows are all casement
But of everything else there isn't much to say

Pain and loss hang in the air
And so the progress is slow
The idea is cheerful and has plenty of flair
When it is completely done, it will be something to show

For now I see the past
And hope for a better place
As time will heal the wounds at last
And the home will be a better space

Money vs. Friendship

Another day, another story of how to change your time
But greatness, in this case, was more about "what's yours is also mine"
No heroic battles, or well-laid, courageous plans
Just brilliant codes and a visionary way of bringing together all your clans
But here's the question that must be asked:
Is your wealth real, if viewed by everyone as an outcast?

Greatness

Some heads were born to wear the laurels
Like Amon's son sent to shake the world
A divine mission set forth in heaven
Over a game of chess played by gods
The players helped by those they worshipped
The losers left to mend their ways
Through time and history such figures walked
Their burdens heavy, guided by fate not chance
A blaze of glory marked their passage
And human immortality to reward their load
Such merit is never without a price
And theirs is always the final sacrifice

Riding along one behind the other
It really is a world of wonder

And it's so nice to be spending them with you

Crazy, stupid, love

What is love if not a gesture and feeling
A rush and a push that can leave you simply reeling
What of those other emotions that are sneaks in disguise
Those that make you believe in smoke, deceit and lies
Most of those are only fancies that glow for just a while
But love is a state that will always make you smile
Through tears and pain, heartache and rain
That one true emotion is a slowly burning ember
That keeps the soul warm even in a cold December

When the honey stops to flow
And the water does not run
There is not much we can do
But suspend our source of fun
Knowing what we do
It is hard to change our ways
But if tomorrow is to shine
Then we must dream of better days
Trust and faith go hand in hand
Yet the mind sometimes reels
When it cannot see the end
And knows only what it feels

Crown

Can a cap ever be lighter than a crown
Since the same holds true the other way around

Is it not better to be but a man
And have just one adoring fan

Scratches on my finger nails
Are just another sign
Of life flowing past me
In a river of songs and wine
A gauntlet of hard won races
Show through in subtle ways
A dye bottle in the cupboard
Eyes that see through haze
The march goes on regardless
And the ones that come behind
Are living what we lived
While we just watch them shine

To a place where the only refuge is in drink

Finding peace

Tell me, friend, do the questions
ever end?
Will we wake up one day and find
That we could have had peace of mind?
Or is this the lesson we must all learn
Akin to how a hand on a hot stove will burn?
Is it a disease of the soul
When all thoughts fall into a black hole?
I guess we just have to live and see
As there's no fast-tracking serenity.

It carries me away to a distant cape

Wondering how, when, if and why
Hoping each day to spend some time

Sigh

What really matters is sometimes hard to describe
When some days you feel completely taken for a ride
Knowing that all things must end
Is not a comfort for a friend
It can be a stressful thing
Waiting for that phone to ring
And wondering if the right effort was made
To escape the slowly encroaching shade
But allowances must be given
As not everyone can be so driven

Morning greeting

When darkness slips away
When the stars and moon say good-night
That's when night belongs to day
And to the sunshine falling bright

July 22, 1992

An instant spent out in the sun
I gained the love of everyone
It shone on me so bright and clear
And brought to mind days most dear
That once, that moment in time and space
I felt compassion for the human race
I saw so clearly loves come and gone
And still my heart sings merrily along
If one wish could ever be mine
It would be to recapture that forgotten time

Choices

I chose this, there is no one else to blame
Now I must play this frustrating game
I cannot fold
For I must hold
My end of the bargain
Or cause much chagrin
And in the end there are things worse
With which I could be cursed

Out of time

I have had no time
To make a rhyme
So this little ditty
While not very pretty
Is my humble offering

Pet shop

I once was free
But now a glass cage surrounds me
I used to roam at will
Over rock and craggy hill
Now strange beings stare back at me
And I'm confused by all I see
Can this really be my fate?
Or for me is it still not too late?

Questions

Can the soul turn its back?
Walk away from the one
Whose every fibre matches the burning, noon-day sun?
When you catch a glimpse of fire,
Can anything else take you higher?
What if you are already bound?
Promised so long ago
Will the spirit understand or fight to let go?
Strength of conviction is what we need
Unless the fire we continue to feed

Kaake

From the high-up perch, surveying the sound
Eyes that bore right through the ground
A jet-black stare that pierces the core
A feigning laugh, what a bleeding bore
The joke's on you mister, can't you see?
I've got wings - so much better to flee
As you stumble and bump around
I'll catch the wind - I'll never be bound!
Only the one who circles higher
Will I allow to call me liar
Until that day, you turn your head
And remember well, what I've just said

Sorry again!

I am so sorry that my postings have missed twice in a row now! I have been extremely tired and I actually forgot last night to post a poem. Naturally, that means today I post two! Hope you like them.

Haiku #3

The sky cracked open
Lightening seared the dry, burnt air
As we watched the show

Too old

Here we are at ten past two
Wondering just what the heck to do
Instead of getting our needed rest
We broke bread with the very best
And now the sheets are calling us
Saying we are too old to fuss

Lapse

Sorry about the lapse
It was the air perhaps?
Or maybe I forgot
Because it was too hot!
But the most likely reason
Is this lazy summer season

Imagination

When your hand touches mine
Is it my face you see
Or an exotic beauty
Who winked at you on the street?
But it's okay - two can play at this game
And your guilt eases my own shame
Since my imagination
Is truly my biggest distraction

Too much

Blackness envelopes me
Flashes of light all I see
Clausterphobia closes in
Thoughts of vile and delicious sin
Things aren't always what they seem
But through it all a light will gleam
Catch that thought and hold on tight
Lest you drown and sink from sight

Get Away

In my mind I get away
To where dolphins laugh and we get to play
Where sunshine's plenty and cares are few
Where I'm just me and skies are blue
A place where smokey fires smoulder
And new friends like rubbing shoulders
Where every path is yet untrod
And my horizon is really vast and broad
In my mind I get away
To where dolphins laugh and we get to play

Black Keys

A sinister kid rocked the stage
A booming drum let loose the rage
Ten thousand fans all joined in
Creating a heavy, harmonious din
The base line says black keys are right
And we bathed in an everlasting light

Power and muscle in a sinewy dance
A golden moment and very rare chance

To stake your claim, your piece of the pie

Ignore you

I don't want to look at you
Hang with you or talk with you
Silence can be golden
But to each other we are beholden
And you'll bother me until
You get your speaking fill
But in my heart is ice
Despite my demeanor of nice

38

It's my thirty-eighth year
Can't believe that I'm here
The numbers just now all seem to bleed
I remember the threes, fours, fives and tens
And all the other numbers since then
And wonder just how they all disappeared
Every number's been good
As every number should
And now I get to relive all my years
Through my growing, little dears.

Morning

Watching the dew burn off the grass
I know in my heart this moment won't last
It will go and another will come
But never again will it be the same one
So I savour the breeze and fragrant smelling trees
And live right now as I watch the gently waving leaves

Canoe time

I spy with my little eye
Two kingfishers and a very large fly
Sitting on a canoe
As the wind whistles through
Enjoying the water
Just mother and daughter

Yes, another silly rhyme - but this time I got help from Tess...

July 4

It was a beautiful day to die
I stepped out of my truck and saw a blue, blue sky
The sun shone hot as only a July orb can do
And I never even saw the car that tore my body in two
Ready I was not
All my plans are now shot
Only 29 short years on the earth
From the moment of my birth
Now my dreams have have disappeared
Since from my body my soul was sheared
But life will go on
Just minus my unique and simple song

Choices

Can chaos be contained?
How about the madness in a brain?
The wilting pride of righteousness
And the crippling pangs of bitterness
Leave marks upon a soul
That slowly corrode any sunny goal
The choice of anger over happiness
Leaves no place for peacefulness
And pushes those away
Whom you most sorely wish would stay

Gone

My muse is gone.
No more getting lost in thought
Now each moment is frought
With tension
The words won't flow
And the world has lost its glow
But only for the moment
I know in time
My muse will shine
And again I'll feel the stream
Until then, I'll struggle just to dream

Walking

Not enough time in every day
To cover all the ground in my way
But each new morning is fresh and bright
And things keeping moving well into the night
Now the path is slowly getting clearer
I feel the incline won't get any steeper
But if it does, I'll simply push right on
After all, for this we were born.

Old friend

Happy birthday, dear friend!
Gone the 12 and 14- year-olds
Our youthful tears long at an end
Our hopes and dreams so different now
Our lives so far apart somehow
But despite it all we always seem
To make quite a happy team
You at one end and I at another
But I know we'll always have each other
So, here's to neighbors near and far
To me you really set the bar!

Jazz Fest

It's summer in the city!
Jazz beats in the air
Sultry slow blues and
Shoulders tanned and bare
An obliging hill
A grassy knoll
A concrete step
A low-slung pole
People watching people
As music flows around
All just caught up
In the festive summer sound

Baby blue

A saffire fell from the sky
A bright-eyed shining star
A purpose he was given
So he travelled from afar
But he is young and so he needs
A guide to lead the way
That is why he was welcomed
Into God's home today
With loving arms to hold him tight
And whispered words of truth and light
His future path all laid out
Along life's journey he'll feel no doubt
Now his mortal mom, dad and sis
Can truly enjoy all his bliss

Decisions

Just how much can one person shoulder,
When the job is meant to be shared?
But you have to live with your decisions
Even if the burden is hence squared
A life of ease is not in the cards
Because I chose heart over mind
I guess that means that the consequence
Will always be thus defined.

A push pin, ribbon, candy stars
and a shining yellow sun!

Moment

Atop my perch I feel the breeze
And wish this moment I could freeze

Yet bittersweet this seems to be
For change really is the key
And starting from scratch is all very well
But some towers I wish just never fell

Deja Vu

Hey wait! I've seen this scene before
At first I wasn't very sure
However now the sounds and emotions are the same
But it's not something I ever wanted to experience again
It's two steps forward and one step back
Wondering what it is we lack
Why the energy won't seem to flow
Every time we want to grow?
Is it what we send out?
A grain of sand and a lot of doubt?
Please let this be the last
And let it change real, real fast

Father's Day

How do you honour the person who has always been your guide?
Even when you didn't know it and took them for a ride?
A steady, calm voice in the midst of chaos
A rational outlook in a world of pathos
A loving heart, a quiet strength
A helping hand that was always lent
A quick, dry wit and a turn for prose
A softie even if it never shows
No questions asked for you to reply
Just a constant presence by your side

Thank you, Papa. I love you.

What's my name?

She wears a rainbow gown
And a shiny purple crown
Her sun dappled hair shines brown
And her face never wears a frown

Cheeks of red
A very large head
And clearly very well fed
She sleeps on a canopied bed

Fancy free and footloose too
Her favorite colours are green and blue
She loves to paint in a a multitude of hues
And never misses any cues

Her name is mystery
But she is part of history

Journeying

Savouring every second of this unforgetable moment in time
Knowing full well that a poem is about to lose its rhyme
Seeing a blank canvas just waiting for the brush
To unleash the latent symmetry that simply cannot be rushed
Though meandering through the fields and hearing the whistle of the reeds
It is straight to our front door that the unknown path does lead
And now we must abide by the rules of the game
And stay on course or lose all we sought to gain

28 degrees

Summer days, hot, sticky and sweet
Burn away winter's frozen sleep
Our cares seem so very far away
As we float through life on golden rays
Scented flowers burst into bloom
Dispelling the north wind's icy gloom
And shimmering waters call us all
To refreshing moments by life's waterfall

Over the rainbow

Judy wasn't the only star
Tonight another travelled just as far
To Oz and back in the blink of an eye
As the stars all went flying by
To amuse and regale us with such delight
Was the spectacle of the night
And one and all pulled together
To deliver a real work of wonder!

A veritable visual symphony
Let me get lost in the magnificent hues
Those striking works of your muse

Hard eyes

Steel vision staring down at me
From a face as pretty as can be
But hiding true identity
Behind a wall beyond which only few can see

Are you woman or are you man?
Or is that the secret behind your plan?
To make us guess your sex and age
Enjoying the confusion of our rage?

You draw me in with your cold, hard stare
Seeing the blush that lays my soul bare
And laughing behind that unflinching gaze
At my discomfort while you are left unfazed

But though you are strong, I am stronger still
And love the joust that tests my will
For in my head I take you down
And in my musk I watch you drown

Looking for words

What happens when the words don't come?
When the commas all stick and the sentences run?
Your mind's a blank and your pen's all dry
And you know it's just not worth a try
It can be most irritating
Frustrating and exasperating
To bang your head against the rail
When each thought is a cold, cold trail
Down a path of bewilderment
And out on a rocky embankment
Where even the surf refuses to spray
Since all your thoughts have ebbed away

What we know

Sitting here listening to truth
I wonder at our arrogance
What we think we know is far from whole
It is all just bits of happenstance
The filtered parts of all our thoughts
Have gaps that change it all
Our memories are lamentably short
And will eventually be our downfall
For in the past we have been great
But the cycle is now winding down
The reset button will soon be used
And reality will wear a new gown

It almost only flows one way
And that's what really pains

Bikeman

On a busy industrial hub
Encosed amidst the fray
The bikeman sits watching
The workers hustling through each day
His shop a tangle of parts
Wheels and rims and oil and chains
Barely room for his gleaming pate
To negotiate all his gains
But known to all is he
Keen of eye and crazy too
Because despite his eccentricity
Freespirits like him are sadly few
So although a challenger mocked his style
All shiny, fast and slick
He still rides when all the while
His foe's heart has ceased to tick

How does it feel to have the music flow from you
To hear the melody long before others do
To see its shape and taste its colour
To own the song others would master?

Tell me, song-smith, what's in your veins
How the ease that gives others such pain?
Is it merely divine inspiration
Or hours of toil and perspiration?

Whatever the secret of your success
Know that I consider you blessed
You hold a magic in your hand
Without which our lives would be ever so bland.

Faith

Of all the lives I've ever dreamt
None has from the start,
Given me such beauty
As this one from the heart.

Although right now my feet seem mired
In some putrid smelling muck,
I know ere long the winds will change
And I'll see myself unstuck.

And so it goes from year to year,
Some up, some down, some filled with fear,
But through it all the sky stays blue,
for all my faith I've placed in You.

In anticipation

Watching the change as the seasons turn
I slowly but surely start to yearn
For a carefree stretch of sizzling sand
Warmed whipped winds and an island band

To escape for a bit this reality
And slip from our rigid formality
Into something much freer and less constrained
Which will bolster the soul and refresh the brain

To wile away the long, sunlit hours
And smell the fresh-cut garden flowers
To walk without coat, hat, mitts or shoes
And soak in the medley of lazy, hazy blues

Ah, summer you come but once a year
But to you every June I raise my beer!

Just four weeks and counting!!!

Elly's eleven elegant eels
Loved eating eggs & orange peels
Early each evening their scraps she would empty
Then heap every plate with more than plenty!

Digger

Burrow deep, as far as you can go,
That's where all the treasure is buried, you know.
When the surface jewels have all run dry,
Much deeper still, the last spot left to try.

You make this world turn around
All beloved for we don't see under-ground,
The scars a reminder of our need,
Our all-consuming and voracious greed.
Hidden from our apathetic eyes,
Content we choose to believe the lies.

But one day soon we will be caught,
And our feeble try will be for nought,
For this our most rare and precious earth,
Will shake us loose in grand rebirth.

Where is my mind?

My mind is slipping constantly
Memory flowing away from me.
All words I say turn into mush
If ever I attempt to rush.
Stuttering through a simple phrase
As if walking through a numbing haze.
Uttering not what I meant to say
And hearing the jibes, come what may.
At least I am silently coherent still
And can say what I must through my quill.

Cheerful Charlie

Cheerful Charlie Crusset
Loved crunching cakes and crumpets,
His common call

Was, "Let them be! Don't clean the crumbs,
I'll eat them off the carpet!"

Let's go

We are in a state of flux
Neither here nor there nor anywhere.
Whipped by tides of guilt
And swept in a rush of motion.
Our minds all a-whirl
Wondering where we might end up.
Groping our way through fog
We challenge notions of who we are
And demand our slice
Of this so-called life.

I'm bound to walk a tightrope
Over a canyon of jagged rocks,
My mind is always racing,
Division in my thoughts.
Though I try to find a balance,
There's no peace in store for me.
Serenity is evasive when it concerns duty & family.
Or maybe that is why, the path that I must tread,
Must atone for my sins, and fills me with such dread.
I swear, I'll never understand,
This forever flexing of my hand,
But someday it might cease
And maybe then I'll find my ease.

Go To Sleep

Your emotions my child
Have never been mild,
But it has become quite clear
That tiredness exasperates them, my dear.
Though going to sleep you despise,
We can tell from your red-rimmed eyes
That slumbering in your bed
Is what you need, instead
You stay up counting sheep,
Twisting, turning, and making us weep.
Your persistence will serve you well
When later on you must ring your own bell.
Just for now we must contend
With a resistance that never seems to end.

Monday's edition

So, I just posted what should have been yesterday's poem - and here is today's. A nursery rhyme to add to the growing collection.

A good and gentle gardener
Was gifted with green thumbs,
His garden grew sweet garlic, grapes,
green beans, gourds and golden geraniums!

Sunday Slip

Sorry about missing a day... it was crazy busy from the moment my feet hit the floor until I collapsed in an exhausted heap at nearly midnight. I should have planned a post, but I had NO time at all to think up flowery words - so, today I will post two poems to make up for it.

Watching you walk down that aisle,
Made me proud
And made me smile.
In a few short years you've really grown
And from this nest, in another few years
You will have flown.
The man you'll be slowly forming
The baby-ness quickly dissolving.
Now, the next time I watch you walk down that aisle
On your arm another women will smile.
And I will sit and soak it up,
Knowing happiness is a never-ending cup.

Little Lemur

A nursery rhyme for the young 'uns.

Little lemur leaping lightly,
Through the lovely lily fronds,
Leap now through the forest spritely
But watch out for those 'gator ponds!

Longing

Why must you be so beautiful?
You make my heart bleed.
To kiss your eyes, your hands, your lips,
An all consuming need.
Your voice a haunting melody,
That stokes an inner fire,
With words that sing right to my soul
And burn me with desire.
But alas you are a shining star
And me an earth-bound being
Who can only gaze at you from afar
While our lives we go on living.

Choppers

Watch the grace in the blue-sheath skin
As the water dance continues, showing the power within.
Satin wings blur in a flurry of flight,
Catching the sun, reflecting the light.
The perfect blueprint for rising, rising up, up so high,
We copied it, yes, we got ours to fly,
But it's a clumsy steel shell, heavy and loud,
Nothing of which nature could ever be proud.
No balletic turns over a diamond-shot drink,
Or breezy-aired kisses sent over the brink.
The tiniest of dragons, your name rings true,
But no fire or smoke will we ever get from you,
Just a sweet pas-de-deux, played over the glade,
While we can only aim for a straighter-edged blade.

You can't push him around
And it's fun to see that
Your bullying has run aground!

No more king of the hill
Your small fiefdom crushed
Your bubble burst
Your tyranny hushed.

Now in your place you sit
Fuming, burning, wondering
From where you got hit.
But it's not all bad,
For that power, you see,
Was something you never had.

ZZZZZzzzzzz

This isn't really a poem, just a stream of consciousness as I sat in our GB meeting yesterday evening...

Inanity
Insanity
Planning
Damning
Parrying
Thrusting
Sparring
Jarring
Break
Take
Snack
Wrack
Guilt
Silt
Shifting
Drifting
Wandering
Pandering
Budgeting
Fidgeting
Clarity
Parity
Drone
Drone
Drone
Drone
Drone
Drone
Escape!

Chaotic

Here we sit with mandates each,
Elected to serve, but power just out of reach.
We talk and turn and fight and plan
But real action a sleight of hand,
For despite the urge to shape our world,
Outcomes are bound in a chaotic swirl,
That hover just beyond our grasp,
Regardless of how we try to clasp
A future in that foggy fate
That we like to think that we can shape.

Mother's Day

Several times in everday,
A little hand will reach for mine,
And a tiny voice will ask my say,
On subjects comic, real and divine.
And though my temper's often short
And from my lips a curt retort,
Their trusting gaze speaks to my heart,
And to earn their love I must start,
For I know in time they'll understand,
And may never again reach for my hand.

Amiable Alice

Another one for the kiddies...

Amiable Alice needed an atlas
In order to find the Nile,
She assumed Abyssinnia
Was south of America
And that the waters ran but half a mile

Divide

My friend has betrayed me.
No more climbing trees
Or chasing green and errant leaves.
No more sprinting fast uphill
For fun or just the mighty thrill.
Gone the days of swimming all day
traipsing blithely come what may.
No more white and glamorous nights,
Dancing 'till dawn - such delights.
We were one, not any more.
We each walked through a different door.
She's chosen age and twilight's call,
While I still want to have it all.
From now until I close my eyes,
We both, each other must despise,
For I refuse to change my course,
And refuse to drink - just like the horse.

Hope

Obama's speech was hope and light
But not for people on the right,
His vision of hope and democracy
Was certainly not for the Land of the Free.
His birthright questioned,
His policies stalled
His detractors triumphed
Through the Congress squall.
Now with the markets generally tanking
Housing's plummet and corrupt banking,
Though none his fault
He's left all alone
To shoulder the blame
For the previous king,
Who left the throne.

Madoff's Melody

Show me where my money went
My cash you have so clearly spent,
No thought of guilt or consequence
Just living large at my expense.
Your inner rot may not show
But it taints the air around, you know.
Now you sit in a gilded cage,
While I must toil to earn a wage.
Instead of enjoying a well-earned rest
I now must give my very best
Or find myself crying salty tears
As I waste these golden years.
But change place with you I never would
For I have acted as I should,
And so my sleep at night is deep
For what we sow we all must reap.

Merry widow

Let's kick this off with a children's rhyme just to get into the spirit of it... and before the dark, deep and desperate stuff comes flowing forth!

Merry widow singing boldly
From the center of your web,
Your eerie song strikes most coldly
Now your belly has been fed.
