Paula's purple peonies paled under pressure
She kept them pleased with pies and peas
And parsnips peeled with pliers!
Yes, it's another silly sort of nursery rhyme. Sorry, but it's all I've got today.
An attempt to write a poem a day for a whole year... no guarantees on quality - just quantity!
A poem a day to keep brain rot away
Join me as I attempt to create a poem a day... whether awesome, bawdy, corny, dreadful, entertaining, fabulous, gross or hilariously hokey, I will try to string together everything from couplets to limericks - just for the fun of fiddling with words!
May 3rd, 2012
Today is quite a special day. I have actually reached the one year mark. I posted my first poem on May 3rd, 2011. I have had a great time doing this. It has basically become a habit and I don’t really want to stop. So, I am going to continue this thread because I have enjoyed it so much. It’s true that most of the poems were terrible. Some were good (or at least I thought so!) but mostly they were a reflection of something I either saw that day, thought of, felt or heard. In any case, I hope you have enjoyed the ride as much as I have. Here’s to letting the word out – come what may!

Walking
Not enough time in every day
To cover all the ground in my way
But each new morning is fresh and bright
And things keeping moving well into the night
Now the path is slowly getting clearer
I feel the incline won't get any steeper
But if it does, I'll simply push right on
After all, for this we were born.
To cover all the ground in my way
But each new morning is fresh and bright
And things keeping moving well into the night
Now the path is slowly getting clearer
I feel the incline won't get any steeper
But if it does, I'll simply push right on
After all, for this we were born.
Old friend
Happy birthday, dear friend!
Gone the 12 and 14- year-olds
Our youthful tears long at an end
Our hopes and dreams so different now
Our lives so far apart somehow
But despite it all we always seem
To make quite a happy team
You at one end and I at another
But I know we'll always have each other
So, here's to neighbors near and far
To me you really set the bar!

Jazz Fest
It's summer in the city!
Jazz beats in the air
Sultry slow blues and
Shoulders tanned and bare
An obliging hill
A grassy knoll
A concrete step
A low-slung pole
People watching people
As music flows around
All just caught up
In the festive summer sound

Baby blue
A saffire fell from the sky
A bright-eyed shining star
A purpose he was given
So he travelled from afar
But he is young and so he needs
A guide to lead the way
That is why he was welcomed
Into God's home today
With loving arms to hold him tight
And whispered words of truth and light
His future path all laid out
Along life's journey he'll feel no doubt
Now his mortal mom, dad and sis
Can truly enjoy all his bliss

Decisions
Just how much can one person shoulder,
When the job is meant to be shared?
But you have to live with your decisions
Even if the burden is hence squared
A life of ease is not in the cards
Because I chose heart over mind
I guess that means that the consequence
Will always be thus defined.

Pockets
How deep are my pockets
It's really hard to tell
Sometimes they fill up fast
And at other times they're an empty shell
Today was a good one
With bits of fluff and feathers too
A push pin, ribbon, candy stars
and a shining yellow sun!

Moment
Atop my perch I feel the breeze
And wish this moment I could freeze
A beautiful sigh caught in time
Knowing it's ours is so sublime
Yet bittersweet this seems to be
For change really is the key
And starting from scratch is all very well
But some towers I wish just never fell

Deja Vu
Hey wait! I've seen this scene before
At first I wasn't very sure
However now the sounds and emotions are the same
But it's not something I ever wanted to experience again
It's two steps forward and one step back
Wondering what it is we lack
Why the energy won't seem to flow
Every time we want to grow?
Is it what we send out?
A grain of sand and a lot of doubt?
Please let this be the last
And let it change real, real fast
At first I wasn't very sure
However now the sounds and emotions are the same
But it's not something I ever wanted to experience again
It's two steps forward and one step back
Wondering what it is we lack
Why the energy won't seem to flow
Every time we want to grow?

Please let this be the last
And let it change real, real fast

11pm and all's not well
Wondering how much more I can take
Of this whining, complaining and crying
Please go to sleep, for my sake,
Or else my sanity will go flying!

Not nature haiku
Sleep overcomes me
My pillow is calling me
Rest now gratefully
I know it's not nature poetry, but it's all I've got tonight!

Father's Day
How do you honour the person who has always been your guide?
Even when you didn't know it and took them for a ride?
A steady, calm voice in the midst of chaos
A rational outlook in a world of pathos
A loving heart, a quiet strength
A helping hand that was always lent
A quick, dry wit and a turn for prose
A softie even if it never shows
No questions asked for you to reply
Just a constant presence by your side
Thank you, Papa. I love you.

What's my name?
She wears a rainbow gown
And a shiny purple crown
Her sun dappled hair shines brown
And her face never wears a frown
Cheeks of red
A very large head
And clearly very well fed
She sleeps on a canopied bed
Fancy free and footloose too
Her favorite colours are green and blue
She loves to paint in a a multitude of hues
And never misses any cues
Her name is mystery
But she is part of history
And a shiny purple crown
Her sun dappled hair shines brown
And her face never wears a frown
Cheeks of red

Journeying
Savouring every second of this unforgetable moment in time
Knowing full well that a poem is about to lose its rhyme
Seeing a blank canvas just waiting for the brush
To unleash the latent symmetry that simply cannot be rushed
Though meandering through the fields and hearing the whistle of the reeds
It is straight to our front door that the unknown path does lead
And now we must abide by the rules of the game
And stay on course or lose all we sought to gain

28 degrees
Summer days, hot, sticky and sweet
Burn away winter's frozen sleep
Our cares seem so very far away
As we float through life on golden rays
Scented flowers burst into bloom
Dispelling the north wind's icy gloom
And shimmering waters call us all
To refreshing moments by life's waterfall
Burn away winter's frozen sleep
Our cares seem so very far away
As we float through life on golden rays
Scented flowers burst into bloom
Dispelling the north wind's icy gloom

Rio
Twitter, twitter all day long
Sing your merry little song
Then let your fancy take flight
As you enliven up the night
With music only you can make
But have a care for your sake
That no one ever tries to cage
Your free and lovely melody
Sing your merry little song
Then let your fancy take flight
As you enliven up the night
With music only you can make
But have a care for your sake
That no one ever tries to cage
Your free and lovely melody

Over the rainbow
Judy wasn't the only star
Tonight another travelled just as far
To Oz and back in the blink of an eye
As the stars all went flying by
To amuse and regale us with such delight
Was the spectacle of the night
And one and all pulled together
To deliver a real work of wonder!

Lost in colours
Bursts of gold and red and green
Beautiful rainbows from the palate gleam
Born to weave a tale
Through pictures bold and frail
Together a medley of harmony
A veritable visual symphony
Let me get lost in the magnificent hues
Those striking works of your muse

Hard eyes
Steel vision staring down at me
From a face as pretty as can be
But hiding true identity
Behind a wall beyond which only few can see
Are you woman or are you man?
Or is that the secret behind your plan?
To make us guess your sex and age
Enjoying the confusion of our rage?
You draw me in with your cold, hard stare
Seeing the blush that lays my soul bare
And laughing behind that unflinching gaze
At my discomfort while you are left unfazed
But though you are strong, I am stronger still
And love the joust that tests my will
For in my head I take you down
And in my musk I watch you drown

Let's get married!
There she comes in a cloud of white
Prepared to set your world alight
Two become one
To face the storms and the fun
Destiny's little dance
Giving us all a chance at romance
Cheers to you this starry night
As you embark on this love-lit flight!

Lullaby
Sing me to sleep, oh beautiful one,
Let your voice be my guide
Although just for a little while
Take me on that magical ride
To slip through streams of sweet smelling dew
And dream honeyed dreams of dancing with you
Is the best kind of sleep that can ever be had
Since awake all just consider me mad
Let your voice be my guide
Although just for a little while
Take me on that magical ride
To slip through streams of sweet smelling dew
And dream honeyed dreams of dancing with you
Is the best kind of sleep that can ever be had
Since awake all just consider me mad

My vida loca
Up at dawn
Yawn, yawn, yawn
Time to run another marathon
From sun-up to night fall
I'm in charge of it all
And no matter what, it's me who gets the call
It's now ten
And I'm hoping for just one moment of zen
Before the madness starts again

VVVvvv
I just have no inspiration today. So, I'll try a quick kid's rhyme and maybe the dam with unblock tomorrow.
A villainous vermin
vaulted onto the valance
venting that Venus never vied
for his visitations
regardless of his various bistro reservations!

American princess
There you sit in your neon tower
Unaware of your immense power
Wondering if your happiness will crumble
Because of another face, pretty and humble
Your place secured three times over
But a wandering knight makes an easy lover
Do not fret fair maid
Your plans were very well laid
And karma's wise and you were deemed good
So you now you enjoy as you should
Unaware of your immense power
Wondering if your happiness will crumble
Because of another face, pretty and humble
Your place secured three times over
But a wandering knight makes an easy lover
Do not fret fair maid
Your plans were very well laid
And karma's wise and you were deemed good

T-minus
Another long haul
But today no stall
Fuel levels steady
Getting things ready
Both ends will burn for a while
But at the end I'll wear a smile

Looking for words
What happens when the words don't come?
When the commas all stick and the sentences run?
Your mind's a blank and your pen's all dry
And you know it's just not worth a try
It can be most irritating
Frustrating and exasperating
To bang your head against the rail
When each thought is a cold, cold trail
Down a path of bewilderment
And out on a rocky embankment
Where even the surf refuses to spray
Since all your thoughts have ebbed away
When the commas all stick and the sentences run?
Your mind's a blank and your pen's all dry
And you know it's just not worth a try

Ju-ju-julep
Flaming ball
Calling us all
To sweet refreshment
And pure enjoyment
Ideal for muscle cars
And conical bras
A by-gone era
Encapsulated forever
Big red sun
Don't set for anyone!

What we know
Sitting here listening to truth
I wonder at our arrogance
What we think we know is far from whole
It is all just bits of happenstance
The filtered parts of all our thoughts
Have gaps that change it all
Our memories are lamentably short
And will eventually be our downfall
For in the past we have been great
But the cycle is now winding down
The reset button will soon be used
And reality will wear a new gown

Dexter Dumpster
Dexter Dumpster had a hamster
Downey soft and dewy too,
During dinner this vermin dared
To deck the deacon and drink his stew!

Cold shoulder
Anger over indifference
A slow burn that eats away
At all the happy memories
Made within each day
A selfish act frozen in time
A clear and telling beacon
Of what's mine is only mine
Despite the little thoughts and gestures
The sacrifices and the reigns
It almost only flows one way
And that's what really pains
