A poem a day to keep brain rot away

Join me as I attempt to create a poem a day... whether awesome, bawdy, corny, dreadful, entertaining, fabulous, gross or hilariously hokey, I will try to string together everything from couplets to limericks - just for the fun of fiddling with words!

May 3rd, 2012

Today is quite a special day. I have actually reached the one year mark. I posted my first poem on May 3rd, 2011. I have had a great time doing this. It has basically become a habit and I don’t really want to stop. So, I am going to continue this thread because I have enjoyed it so much. It’s true that most of the poems were terrible. Some were good (or at least I thought so!) but mostly they were a reflection of something I either saw that day, thought of, felt or heard. In any case, I hope you have enjoyed the ride as much as I have. Here’s to letting the word out – come what may!

Gardening

The ground is thawing now
The earth is breathing again
The sap is slowly flowing
And the gardener is anticipating
This the happiest time of year
Holds everything we hold most dear

Music box

Jewel box twinkling bright
A little star in the dark of night
Your music lifts my spirit
Every time that I hear it
It hearkens back to a simpler time
When life was one big nursery rhyme

Recital

Little dancer gearing up
You're about to drink from an ancient cup
Small feet getting set to twirl
A big, big dream for a little girl
We can't wait to see the show
To watch you shine, to watch you glow!

Phone perspectives

At the other end of the phone
Is a voice that calls for aid
Depending on the day
It can range in scale and grade
It throws into perspective
The very sad and disturbing trend
That entitled men and women
Don't see how their lives can end

Choices before

Finding out now how cloistered we are
Living a harsher reality only from far
Thanking our blessings that we don't have to fear
Of living in dread and risking our tears
Maybe we couldn't bear to withstand
The rigors of having a bitter, mean hand
No matter the reason we're grateful we're spared
That we're loved and accepted even though we didn't dare

Story-teller

You had thousands of stories to tell
None did you know very well
But in the balance hung all that's dear
And without wits your end was near
So you wove your magic thread
To save hundreds from mortal dread
You became the kingdom's deliverer
With no more than a tongue dripping silver
Now your imagination's flights
Has endured more than a thousands-and-one-nights

Phone call

Let's call to shake up every thing
No harsher words than a frozen ring
We want to live without a care
But complete freedom we wouldn't dare
All guilt we have because we must
As in this life there's little trust

Clean garage haiku

A nice clean garage
Can be very hard to beat
As now we can walk

To do list

One more thing checked off the list
No better feeling than getting it done
A short day's work to save a dime
All it took was a little time

Now the tasks are getting larger
But chances are we'll tackle them too
For after all, it's how we'll learn
The most that'll happen is we'll get burned

Waiting Room

Sitting before the door
Just waiting to get in
Another hoop to jump
Let's hope that we win!

Mortal

Bottle the drug that keeps us young
The pills that makes the blood still run
The tonics to tone the muscles back
The elixirs that replace all that we lack
Inspite of it all we'll end up gone
As nothing on earth lasts too long

Daughter

Twirl and swirl in your pretty dress
Your heading into that age, I guess
Where romance blooms and the world's alight
Where fireflies dance to set the night
Watch your step my pretty one
I know the world is lots of fun
But I watch and worry from afar
Knowing how young you are
And want only what's good and best
For you hold my heart in your breast

Swimming

How feed the words that just won't come
When the thoughts you feel have begun to run
No knowing where these rivers flow
Except into that vast ocean down below
Waters through which we all must swim
Negotiating our way through every whim
Some sink, others struggle while some float
Others even find or build a boat
But in the end it all ends the same way
In a land more beautiful than our place of grey

April

April's such a changing thing
No melody in the tune she sings
A cold, damp day today we share
Tomorrow we'll bake in the sun's hot glare
Snowflakes remind us of winter's chill
Then melt away as snowflakes will
Now we wait for warmer days
So we can bask in the summer haze

To home with love

The songbird's mate was chosen well
To guard the nest in which they dwell
The birdlings call with tiny tweets
Receiving love and gifts and many sweets
As the songbird must travel, must spread his wings
And regale the masses as he sings
His job is such that he cannot stay
But he carries his home while he's away
Within his heart he's learned the tune
That rare refrain that only he can croon
It speaks to love and fidelity
Despite his whirlwind reality
But carry it well he does and must
As his happy home he leaves in trust

DW2013 #2

A tiny mouse started the ball
One man's dream encompassed it all
A fine example of imagination
Brought to life by inspiration
Now we all enjoy the memory
Of a brilliant mind's legacy

DWHS

The silver screen reeled  us in
With fun and joy we all win
No stopping progress, this is true
But the classic flicks are dyed in blue

Today

Today we chased the sun
Today we had a lot of fun
Today the world was ours
If only for a few hours
And now we fall asleep
In memory the day to keep

Tree of life

We stood around the tree of life
And marvelled at this land
Asking how the mind works
To guide the capable hand

DW2013

We're finally here!
The happiest place on earth
Let's make this week last

It worked

That's one for the little guy
The one who hardly speaks
Who accepts what's been given
Even if it reeks

Learning how to ask
Is really the very first move
Knowing when to speak
Will get you in the groove

Rainbow

This is an invitation
To anyone who cares
To show your inner being
Let's wait and see who dares

So few can show or tell us
Of their brightly coloured soul
For fear of recrimination
For fear of being swallowed whole

Questing

Cutting through the chatter
Of an endless crowded square
Knowing that the details
Are often hard to share

Searching for the faces
Of those we thought we knew
Wondering now that they
Seem to be so few

Although we want to seek
The truth of history
We often close our eyes
To things we dare not see

Anticipation

Three sleeps
Just three sleeps
How will we ever
Make it to Thursday?
Three sleeps
Just three sleeps
But it just drags on
And we have to wait.
