A poem a day to keep brain rot away

Join me as I attempt to create a poem a day... whether awesome, bawdy, corny, dreadful, entertaining, fabulous, gross or hilariously hokey, I will try to string together everything from couplets to limericks - just for the fun of fiddling with words!

May 3rd, 2012

Today is quite a special day. I have actually reached the one year mark. I posted my first poem on May 3rd, 2011. I have had a great time doing this. It has basically become a habit and I don’t really want to stop. So, I am going to continue this thread because I have enjoyed it so much. It’s true that most of the poems were terrible. Some were good (or at least I thought so!) but mostly they were a reflection of something I either saw that day, thought of, felt or heard. In any case, I hope you have enjoyed the ride as much as I have. Here’s to letting the word out – come what may!

Dragons Den

A dead idea is what they say
But I can't accept that, there's just no way
So I'll plow on no matter what
'Cause it will work - I know in my gut
Let them throw their hard remarks
They'll never extinguish these brillint sparks

Scent

Tangy citrus fills the air
A burst of fragrance every where
But the scent is not always sweet
When sitting all day in your seat

Fences

Behind the fences we all stay
Going about our work each and every day
Knowing so little of what's going on
Listening only to our own song
Until we're shaken from our daze
And realize too late we're lost in the maze

Silk

Butterfly in your silk cocoon
Don't shut your eyes to the glittering moon
Your wings are stronger than you think
As long as you flap you'll never sink
So flutter away in your world of rose
And leave to others all worries and woes

Words

My heart's not made of stone
And all those words were thrown
Without a care of what they mean
For the hurt is all unseen
Now the next generation is getting a taste
Of the barbs, the taunts, the waste
And it hurts even more the next go round
Because peace we thought was found

New life

What is it like to close your eyes
And wake up in a different life?
Will the light draw you in
As long as there's no greater sin?
Or will confusion keep you there
Moving lightly, as if through air?
Of either option the only must
Is passing the vortex while the old turns to dust

Yes

Crying out for release
From this obligation that I feel
To always be told you're wrong
And made to feel like a heel
Bullies come is many shapes
And many sizes too
But the ones that hurt the most
Are the ones you are closest to

First Snow

Winter's back! With a vengeance.

No quiet return over several days
No delicate flakes to brighten pathways
Just a dump of white from the sky
Leaving us all to question why
We live in this frozen spot
Where nine months of the year, it's just not hot!

The cold has frozen my brain and I can't think up anything better today. Sorry to make you suffer along with me!

Swan

Let my heart beat for the very last time
Bleach my skin with bitter lime
Take me to that frozen place
Where virtue's the only saving grace
I will not cry
When my blood's drained dry
And as my flesh turns to stone
In strength and beauty I will have grown
Now grant the wish of my inner heart
So we both may make a brand new start
Forever can't ever be long enough
For this kind of wondrous, fairy-tale stuff
Quickly now the sun's going down
I'm anxious to wear this crimson crown
Where life will suddenly be extreme
But also a never-ending dream

A little tribute to B & E.

You have mail

Yay! for the mail carrier who brings good news
On days when you'd otherwise be singing the blues
Life turns around in unexpected ways
And brings sudden surprises on grey-ish days
A reminder, I guess, to count our blessings
Since forgetting the roses is one of our biggest failings

One, two, three

Let the waves wash over me
Vibrating my soul so endlessly
I move to the beat and let myself fly
Knowing inside one day I'll die
Until then I want to live and breathe
Feeling a rhythm that will never deceive

Run

Help me find that ounce of grace
That will help me run this long-distance race
Keep me on top of all these facts
That will get me through the many acts
Excitement is now the adrenaline
Fueling each early morning spin
I just hope that it will last
And not become another part of the past

Merry go round

Another round we go
Where it stops we don't know
This time was okay
Next time, who's to say?
At least our minds are at rest
That we did our very best

Hermit crab

A river of sand fills my eyes
Settling on me a heaviness that never lies
Claiming sleep the body craves
While every gesture one that saves
Time for me and you as well
For tis time to climb out of this shell

Energizer!

Never a dull moment
In a mother's day
From first rays, until the sunset
Her will-power is the only way
A constant engine chugging along
Making sure all things get done
And only collapsing at the end
When every last battle has been won!

Delicious rays

To brighten a day
Seeing sun in November
Like icing on cake

A haiku ode to a so-far awesome November!

Past and present

Old friends and new
The faces of youth ring a bell
I remember those shoes, the slouch
And I remember it so well
Been there before
Seen that keen-ness and felt it too
After all this time
I hope it works much better for you

Punched in

First day jitters disolved
Now to get through the grind
Without losing my mind
Knowing in part helps
But feeling the cramping
Is highly disheartening
Must just push through
It's the best thing to do

Fight or flight

Beware the Jabberwocky
It will eat your fear
And grow more hideous
With each passing year
The bigger it grows
The harder 'twill be
To do what you will
Independently
But slay it small
And you will see
That it weren't so fearsome
As made out to be
Just frightful enough
To keep you in check
On the road well trod
So you won't deflect
But if your heart
Be something stronger
Then hack away
And dream that much longer

Walk!

A steady clip set to the beat
A happy rythm moves my feet
A thrill as the air whips my skin
An old stirring starts deep within
A feeling buried deep inside
One that age cannot hide
Starting again is always fun
But this time around it's walk not run

Cho'cola

Red velvet, much better than than chocolate
A valentine's treat any day of the week
Topped with butter, there's nothing better
But one is plenty, unless you're empty

Payback

Another trip
Let's get a grip
This can't go on
It's just so wrong
Let's find a way
To have our say
So we can be
Without this fee

Homework

Homework hell is bad enough once
The second time over is even worse
Instead of a quiet and carefree evening
We face sums and grammar and constant whining
Can't wait for the day when it will be done
Without my nagging everyone
For now, at least, it is very plain
That I must endure this daily pain

Ballet class

Fly little dancer!
Twirl and spin!
Race around the room
With your beautiful grin
Point your toes
Arch your arms
A sweet pas-de-deux
Brings out your charms
Each step is joy
For you and me
Watching your glow
Is heaven to see

Loss

Desire can die in so many ways
Sometimes it is slow and insidious
Sometimes it vanishes overnight
Actions and words can erode the soul
And drive a wedge into even the smallest cracks
Can it be regained?
The future really holds the key
While the heart must let go of the past

Monsters

Can the heart be satisfied if split in two?
If pulled in different directions, what is one to do?
Such is the choice faced by our heroine
Whose blood is the drug craved by our gentleman
But choose she does despite her fears
For true love will always triumph despite the tears

Kapricious kads

Insincerity reigns supreme
When your wedding is not a dream
But just a cynical, perverse game
Aimed at fortune and shameless fame
Why bother with any vows
When you roll with dirty sows?
Just throw your weight in another ring
For the one on your finger has lost its zing

Musings

American dreams
Not what it seems
Fraying slowly
Despite everything holy
Turn back
Or fade to black

Two-For

I very unwittingly missed a day because of sheer exhaustion - not a good enough excuse, I know - sorry about that! I have therefore, included two poems for today to make up for this oversight.

Falling for fall

Sunlight filters through the leaves
Crowning the trees in blazing colour
No more delectable time of year
Than this honey-gold autumn flavour

Making merry while the sun still shines
Knowing that the north wind is getting ready
To blow our cares back into focus
While we long for the days of warmth and plenty

Happy again

Yes, that bleakness has gone
I am again ready to sing my song
I know the future is looking bright
No more sorrow or loss of sight
Focused more keenly on what is true
Knowing that we will make it through
Confident in the spirits that support us all
Knowing that we can never fall
